Tachles Israel is an independent information service, not a government authority. Check binding conditions, eligibility and deadlines with the official source.

Before you start

This guide helps you organise checks before a purchase. It does not replace an independent mechanical inspection, legal advice where needed, or verification of vehicle details through official services.

Who is this guide for?

People considering buying a used car in Israel.

Conditions and exceptions

Checks, documents, restrictions and requirements may vary according to the vehicle, its owner and the transaction. Verify the details before paying.

01

Verify the vehicle and seller’s details

Compare the vehicle and its documents with the details you have been given. Request relevant documents and check the identity of the person selling the vehicle.
What should you prepare?

Vehicle documents and seller’s details, depending on the transaction.

Please note

Do not rely solely on a screenshot or a statement when you can check the information with an authorised source.

02

Arrange an independent mechanical inspection

Arrange an inspection by an independent professional with expertise in that type of vehicle. Ask for an explanation of the findings, likely repairs and their implications before deciding.
What should you prepare?

Vehicle details and any documents requested by the inspector.

Please note

An inspection does not guarantee that faults will not appear later.

03

Check restrictions and the transfer of ownership

Check with the Ministry of Transport whether ownership can be transferred and under what conditions. The ministry states that a lien on a vehicle prevents a transfer; the organisation that registered the lien handles its removal.
What should you prepare?

The details and documents listed on the official service page.

Please note

Do not pay or hand over the vehicle on the assumption that ownership can be transferred before checking its actual status.

04

Record the terms of the transaction

Put the essential details, payment arrangements, handover date and any commitments agreed between the parties in writing.
What should you prepare?

A written agreement or contract suitable for the transaction.

Please note

If there is legal uncertainty, obtain professional advice before signing.

05

Check insurance before using the vehicle

Ask an insurer or insurance agent which cover is required and suitable before driving the vehicle.
What should you prepare?

Vehicle and driver details as requested by the insurer.

Please note

Do not drive until you have confirmed that the appropriate insurance and legal requirements are met.
